Latest on the Laser Scanning

Over the course of the past two weeks, my group has scanned the bicorne hat, Elizabeth Monroe’s wedding shoe, the pistols, and James Monroe’s outfit. We hope to scan the White House chair next week. Additionally, we also recorded footage and two interviews with the curator about the pistols and the chair. We would have continued to interview the curator this week, but we were unable to check out a video recorder. Instead, we compiled and edited information from the object files to include with the 3D laser scans and interviews on the website.

  1. It is good to hear that you and your group members were able to make good progress on the scanning, because I can only imagine how frustrating it must have been beforehand! For the interviews, are you asking the curator specific questions, or is he just generally talking about each item? Also, will you include transcripts of the interviews with the videos?

    1. The curator talks about the object’s history and notable features during the interviews. Currently we’d like to use closed captioning on the videos because they will be on the same page as the 3D laser scan and all of the object’s museum information. We’re afraid that the amount of information would be overwhelming if we include a transcript. However, that is something we would like to talk to Dr. McClurken about.
